DEFENSIVE MISTAKES SEE YOUTHS CRASH OUT OF CUP
Sutton fell at the first hurdle in the Lucas Fettes Cup losing out to Met Police at Gander Green Lane as they couldn’t recover from a poor first half performance.
The visitors started the game by far the stronger and could have taken an early lead when Prince Eze missed from close range, but moments later Ryan Facey capitalised on a lack of communication between Aaron Afriyie and Sandile Wydler-Manzi to nip in and slot the ball into an unguarded net. Alex Masoapatali then crashed a shot against the crossbar but after 25 minutes Met Police doubled their lead when Eze beat the offside trap latching onto to Luke Mitchell’s through-ball before slotting under the advancing Wydler-Manzi.
A vastly improved second half performance from Sutton nearly saw them pull a goal back in the opening moments as Stefan Ilic fed Josh Danquah but he shot wide, but a minute later Danquah fed Crossley Lema down the right and his low cross was turned past the keeper by Tobi Adaje. Lamar Fowlkes then found Ilic in space but his low shot was turned around the post by the keeper, then the visitors were reduced to ten men when Eze was shown his second yellow card after clattering into Wydler-Manzi. Adaje then saw a powerful strike parried over the bar by the keeper whilst Tom Mallett, Darnell Austin and Anrius Lucauskas all failed to find the target as Sutton sought an equaliser but with fifteen minutes to go, Mallett’s slip inside his own area allowed Dan Scantlebury the simple task of slotting past Wydler-Manzi to effectively put the game beyond doubt. Kieran Rhule pulled a goal back with a long range curling effort late on, but it was too little, too late.
