We are greatly saddened to announce that club director Brian Williams, our former club secretary, passed away on Tuesday evening after a long illness.

A semi-professional footballer in the 1950s and 60s, Brian had played for South East Cheshire Schoolboys with Frank Blunstone (Chelsea and England) and from there went to Prestbury in the Macclesfield League and scored quite a few goals, bringing him to the attention of the local Cheshire League clubs and he played for his home town of Congleton, Buxton and Stafford Rangers in the Cheshire League, one of only two semi-pro leagues in the country at that time. Brian also played for the Royal Air Force during his time doing National Service.

Brian worked for Hovis in Macclesfield and after he was given a job at their head office in London he played in the Southern League for Dartford. After "retiring" Brian carried on playing until he was 54, turning out for Sainsburys for twenty years in the London Business League. He started to watch the U’s in the 1980s with his good friend from RAF days George Seymour and took on the role of football club Secretary between 1990 and 1999, also joining the board of directors of Sutton United FC Ltd in January 1996. Brian and his wife Meryle were familiar figures around the club and also followed the team to almost all away games up until lockdown earlier this year.

Brian was also a keen cricketer and if he ever missed a Sutton game you could be sure that he would instead be found watching Surrey or England at The Oval.

He will be much missed by all who knew him and everyone at Sutton United offers their deepest sympathies to Meryle, their children Joanna and Nick and to Nick’s family, Max, Mia, Cerys and Erin
