For much of last season it seemed likely that the clubs would be meeting as equals in League Two this season, but improved form towards the end of the season, including a crucial win at relegation rivals Accrington on the penultimate weekend of the campaign, saw them survive on the last day of the season with a victory at home to Forest Green which left them one point ahead of MK Dons and three ahead of Morecambe and Accrington.

This season started well with a 2-0 win against Oxford on Saturday, and they come to Sutton looking to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup for the fifth season in a row. Last season they beat Championship side Millwall in the first round before going out at home to then Premier League Southampton in round two. Their squad this season includes Adam May and Brandon Haunstrup, who were on loan together at Sutton in the 2016-17 season, May going on to feature in the FA Cup run and winning Young Player of the Year, but both are currently recovering from injury and may not play on Tuesday.

Sutton have never reached the second round of this competition, failing to survive challenging games at Cardiff and MK Dons, but will hope to build on Saturday’s exhilarating start to the season at home to Notts County. On loan striker Aiden O’Brien is eligible to play, so manager Matt Gray hopes to be able to name an unchanged squad.

Tuesday’s referee is Daniel Middleton, in his first full EFL season although he took charge of Sutton’s game at home to Crewe last season and has refereed us on a number of occasions in the National League.

Should the scores be level after 90 minutes on Tuesday the game will go straight to penalties, with the winners going in to a second round which will include the Premier League sides not involved in European competition this season, Chelsea and Tottenham among possible opponents.

Prices for the game are reduced and tickets can be bought on line here. Prices are £15 for adults, £9 for concessions (age 60+ and full time students) and £4 for juniors aged 12-18. Under 12s tickets are free if bought in conjunction with an adult or concession ticket. Seat prices rise by £4 in all cases. The home fanzone will be open on Tuesday serving hot pies and drinks for supporters wanting to enjoy what we hope will be some early evening sunshine as they look forward to the game, and all bars will be open after the game.
