Sutton United are delighted to announce the signing of Ipswich Town right back Edwin Agbaje on a loan deal until January.

The 20-year old arrives at the VBS Community Stadium with a year’s experience, and will offer Steve Morison athleticism, diligence and composure on the ball as he looks to bolster his squad with an additional defensive option.

Born in Edenderry, Ireland, Agbaje began his career in the Shamrock Rovers academy where he caught the eye of Ipswich Town, with the Tractor Boys bringing him to England in 2020. After two years in the youth team, the young defender made his first team debut in October 2022, starting at right back in an EFL Cup defeat against Cambridge United, with manager Kieran McKenna describing him as being “a really hungry and determined young man”

Agbaje gained first team experience whilst on loan at Yeovil Town last season, featuring ten times before a season-ending injury brought his campaign to an abrupt close, but nonetheless was part of a title-winning Glovers team, with Mark Cooper’ side sealing promotion back to the National League at the first attempt, following relegation in 2023.

In addition, Agbaje is a Republic of Ireland youth international, picking up ten caps from Under-15 to Under-18 level. The defender scored his first international goal in a 3-0 friendly victory over Albania for the Under-16’s, as well as captaining the Under-18’s in an international friendly defeat to Sweden.

Morison was keen to bring the Irishman to Gander Green Lane, with the U’s Head Coach claiming “We are thrilled to welcome Edwin Agbaje to Sutton United. As a former Under-18 Republic of Ireland international with a bright future, Edwin brings both talent and promise to our squad.”

“Coming from Ipswich Town, where we’ve also secured Fin Barbrook on loan, it’s clear that Ipswich sees the value in nurturing young talent through our club. Edwin is an exciting prospect, and we’re confident he will make a significant impact this season.”

Edwin will be available for selection from mid-September, due to an injury sustained with Ipswich while on a pre-season tour of Austria.

Welcome to Sutton United, Edwin!
