Orient went ahead eight minutes before half time when the lively Charlie Pegrum was tripped by Lanseny Traore, and picked himself up to score from the penalty spot. He might have scored again on the stroke of half time but sent his shot straight at goalkeeper Enos Duah, who made three more smart saves in the second half to deny the same player.

Sutton’s equaliser came with ten minutes left when a corner was cleared to substitute George Vorster, whose cross shot was neatly flicked in by Josh Nunes, and U’s were handed a golden chance to turn the game round moments later when George Costello was brought down by David Agyemang as he tried to break through on the right of the penalty area. However Oliver Khinda’s spot kick was saved by Noah Phillips to send the tie in to extra time.

Although Sutton had marginally the better of extra time, and Jordan McNally was denied by a fine challenge from Marley St Louis, the decisive moment came with five minutes to go when Reon Smith-Kouassi headed the ball on to Pegrum on the left and continued his run to collect the return pass and slot the ball beyond Duah for what proved to be the winner.
