The new year has seen plenty look to turn over a new leaf in 2025, and a number of on-loan U’s have been getting some important minutes in their legs, predominately from the club’s academy.
Following his senior debut for the U’s against West Ham United in the National League Cup, Sam Roberts returned to Sutton Common Rovers in search of regular game time, having previously appeared six times for last season. Roberts was immediately called into action to make his second debut a day after joining and started in the 1-0 defeat to table topping Farnham Town. Sam’s second appearance came in a 4-2 loss to last years play-off semi finalists Southall.
Junior Eccleston has continued his stint with Walton & Hersham and impressed at the heart of the Swans’ backline. After initially being controversially sent off against Merthyr Town at the end of December, Eccleston saw his red card rescinded and subsequently made four starts for Walton throughout January, who currently occupy the last play-off spot of the Southern Premier South League.
Furthermore, Vinnie Tume made three starts for South Park Reigate which included draws against Horndean and Rayners Lane, as well as appearing in a defeat to title favourites Kingstonian.
Surrey-based outfit Ashford Town have also aided the development of two young U’s. George Vorster appeared six times in total and found himself on the scoresheet twice during January, finding the back of the net in a 2-1 defeat to Ascot United and a 5-0 win against Guernsey. Liam Moore also continued to spend time with Ashford Town, and also made six appearances for the Tangerines either side of a National League Cup appearance for Steve Morison’s side, becoming the club’s youngest ever captain against West Bromwich Albion.
In addition, Jay Williams appeared just once for Merthyr Town after his loan was extended on Boxing Day. The Wales youth international featured in a 2-0 win over Taunton Town, helping to extend their stay at the top of the Southern League Premier South.
