Sutton is bidding to be the London Borough of Culture in 2023 and Sutton Council is calling on everyone to help make this happen.Members of the council’s bid team will be at tomorrow’s game against Ebbsfleet to publicise the bid and gain support prior to it being submitted on Monday.

The

Borough of Culture is a programme run by the Mayor of London to

promote culture across the capital. Winning this would mean £1.35m

worth of funding to devote to Sutton’s culture, in 2023 and beyond.

Culture

includes every aspect of our lives from how we eat, dress,

communicate, celebrate and socialise. Culture is found in our streets

and public spaces, in our restaurants and cafes, our libraries and

community centres. It is central to understanding where we are now,

where we have come from, and where we are going.

The

bid supports the council’s priority of improving health and

wellbeing by bringing culture to the heart of the borough. Winning

the competition will make community-led activities more accessible to

local people and inspire a whole new generation of football fans and

players of all ages and from all backgrounds.

Sutton

offers so much for visitors, including our local communities,

community arts, and heritage. Securing and hosting matches in a

London Borough of Culture will not only have a significant impact on

the local economy, but it will mark out Sutton as the place to be.

The

bid will be submitted to the Mayor of London on 28 October, and the

winning borough will be announced in January 2020.
