After recovering from a goal down to equalise early in the second half, two goals in the space of three minutes in the last quarter of the game consigned our women’s team to defeat at The Homelands.
Ashford took the lead in the 13th minute with a dipping shot from outside the penalty area that went in off the underside of the bar. Sutton had two promising attacks as first Gabby Huddle-Smith and then Emma Spear broke through, but on both occasions the cross just evaded the forwards in the penalty area. Just before half time Ashford went close to a second goal with a header that went across goal and just wide of the post.
Sutton began the second half well and after seeing a header deflected just wide from a corner, Hannah Baptiste equalised as she ran on to Milly Cutler’s pull back and fired first time low in to the net. For much of the rest of the half Sutton looked the likelier winners as Buddle-Smith saw a shot well saved and Spear’s corner was scrambled off the line by the goalkeeper, but with fifteen minutes left a home striker ran on to a through ball and hammered a shot in off the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.
Immediately afterwards Eden Clark made a fine save from a deflected shot, and blocked another effort from the resulting corner but the clearance rebounded back in to the net off Maddie Headingham-Ford to confirm Ashford’s first league victory of the season.
Next Sunday our women’s team are at home to Ebbsfleet at Chipstead, kick off 2pm.
