What had for 91 minutes been the epitome of the perfect away performance from Sutton was ruined in a ninety second stoppage time period which saw Doncaster, who had been second best for much of the afternoon, score twice to claim the unlikeliest of victories. It was a shattering finish to the game for U’s, who had led from Donovan Wilson’s 16th minute goal, with the only reservation about their display being the failure to add the goals that would not have flattered them, although home goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell deserves credit for two good first half saves, the second from Omar Bugiel an outstanding close range stop.

The goal rounded off what had been a good start from U’s, and was created by Josh Neufville, starting in place of the injured Will Randall, with a burst of pace on the left of the penalty area and a low cross which was flicked against the post by Louis John. Bugiel and Wilson both had shots blocked as the ball ran loose, but Wilson’s second effort powered in to the roof of the net.

For much of the rest of the half U’s were on top, but Mitchell made a good stop to his left to deny Wilson a second, and then brilliantly turned aside Bugiel’s close range volley. Ali Smith slid in at the far post but was unable to turn in a low cross shot from Wilson, while Bugiel and Coby Rowe were convinced that a Bugiel header had been handled by Ro-Shaun Williams, but referee Ben Speedie was unmoved and Craig Eastmond blazed the loose ball over the bar. Doncaster also came close to contributing a bizarre second when Joseph Oluwu’s header back to Mitchell went past the keeper but also fortunately for him past the post.

Doncaster had rarely threatened, George Miller putting a header from a corner over the bar and Tommy Rowe shooting over from James Maxwell’s cross after an attack which had started when Joe Kizzi attempted a quick throw-in in an attacking position but gifted possession to the home team. However early in the second half Coby Rowe was outjumped for the only time by Josh Andrews, and John allowed himself to be dispossessed by Tommy Rowe, who went clear in to the penalty area and was denied by a fine save by Rose.

That was the closest the home team came, with U’s well organised and Coby Rowe impressing in Ben Goodliffe’s absence, and a snap shot on the turn by Wilson was well held by Mitchell when U’s countered. However the game changed dramatically just after the reserve official had indicated four additional minutes. First Rose came out to punch clear an Adam Clayton cross from the right, but Tommy Rowe controlled the loose ball and made space for a cross which was headed in by Miller, Rose getting a hand to the effort but unable to keep it out.

That was disappointing enough after what had gone before, but worse followed as Coby Rowe and Rose seemed uncertain who would deal with a long ball from Clayton, and Miller nipped between them to divert the ball in to the path of substitute Kieran Agard, whose shot found the empty net despite Rose’s attempt to recover his position, sending the home fans in to raptures at a result that five minutes earlier had seemed a long way away.
