Sutton’s academy side claimed a second Combined Counties League scalp in the Surrey Senior Cup with an impressive victory at Horley Town. Apart from goalkeeper Matt Kerbey, as at Epsom in the last round U’s fielded a side of young academy players and deserved a victory that always looked likely after George Vorster and Vinnie Tume had scored in the first ten minutes.

Sutton might have gone ahead in the first minute, Vorster going clear but denied by goalkeeper George Hyde, with Khyan Edwards seeing his effort from the rebound scrambled off the line, but the two players soon combined to good effect as Vorster met an Edwards cross at the far post with a neat volley, and four minutes later Cameron Sullivan’s chip in from the left was converted first time by Tume to give U’s a flying start.

Liam Moore shot just wide and Joden Trickett had a shot saved at the near post as Sutton came close to extending their lead, but after a scare when Sam Harper shot wildly over after capitalising on a defensive error, and Junior Eccleston was booked for hauling down Joshua Alder, Horley did pull a goal back when Alder received a lay-off from Scott Walker and sent a low first time shot beyond Kerbey in to the corner of the net.

An untidy second half saw few chances at either end, Sutton scrambling the ball away from the six yard box when substitute Cameron  Gyeabore deflected a shot goalwards, and at the other end wasting some promising positions with disappointing crosses. Edwards shot just wide from the edge of the penalty area, but with ten minutes to go Trickett’s low shot was spilled by Hyde and Tume pounced to force the ball in to the net and secure a home tie against Corinthian Casuals in the last eight.
