Sutton United Women 2 Newhaven 1
Posted: 19th August 2024Sutton United Women played host to Newhaven at their new home at the NRT Stadium in Chipstead for their opening game of the season.
Both teams came into the game looking to get their seasons off the perfect start.
It was a close first half with both sides coming close to an opener with Newhaven having the better of the chances with some dangerous crosses into the box but the danger was well dealt with by the Sutton defence.
But it was Sutton who scored first with Jaz Backhurst smashing one in from outside the box to open the scoring and her account for the season.
Just minutes later it was Backhurst again to double Suttons lead, with yet another strike from range to put us two in front so close to the half time whistle.
But Newhaven striked back not long after to make it 2-1 to Sutton going into the break.
The second half was largely dominated by Sutton with several good chances which could have seen us extend our lead by a handful of goals had it not been for an excellent display by the Newhaven keeper.
The game ended Sutton 2 – 1 Newhaven.
After the game Manager Lucy Clark said:
“We made hard work of it today and a 5-6 nil win would not have flattered us! Losing our CB 5 mins before kick off was a bit of a blow but we settled well and looked by far the better team. We made a big mistake for their goal but we learn from that. Overall happy to get 3 points on the board and we are off and running”.
Suttons next game is away to Haywards Heath Town on the 25th August.
