New manager Matt Gray is wasting no time and is continuing with his reorganisation of the squad. "We have a good squad and a great core of retained players to build on but we need to strengthen the team in key areas and so I have identified some targets and will be working hard on bringing in some new faces. However, if we bring new players in then it inevitably means that there will have to be a few departures too."
Goalkeeper Ross Worner will not have his contract renewed this summer. A member of the 2016 National League South championship side, Ross made 131 appearances for the club, returning to action in September after a year and a half out of the game due to injury. Matt explained: ”We have two top goalkeepers but unfortunately I’m not in a position to have two first choice goalkeepers, and Ross is out of contract this summer. I’m more than happy with Jamie Butler as first choice, and I will probably look to bring in a young keeper as understudy.”
In addition, Matt is transfer listing midfielders James Dobson and Josh Taylor, winger Darren McQueen and striker Jonah Ayunga. ”These are all attacking players. It was in attack that we struggled last season so we need to freshen things up, and unfortunately to do that I’ve got to let players go as well.” The news comes after it was announced yesterday that Nicky Bailey, Dean Beckwith, Aswad Thomas and Brett Williams were being released. Matt said: ” I know Dean and Nicky have done very well for the club over a number of years and have been excellent servants. All four players are good people, and I want to wish them all the best for the future.”Matt hopes to have more news of player and coaching changes in the near future, saying: ”Unfortunately we’ve had to do the negative side of letting players go first, but I’m looking forward to announcing additions to the squad and staff over the coming weeks.”
