Sutton and Dulwich finally managed to play this London & South East Regional League Cup 2nd round tie at the sixth time of asking, with Sheerwater’s 3G surface unaffected by the heavy rain on a wet and cold afternoon, and it was Sutton who progressed to an away 3rd round tie with Leatherhead thanks to a penalty early in the second half. After a first half of few chances, it was two half time substitutes who combined to create the decisive moment as Jas Backhurst whipped in a cross from the left and Illana Harris-Walters was impeded as she tried to make contact at the far post. Beth Humphrey stepped up to coolly slot home the penalty and give U’s a lead that they defended despite Dulwich having a lot of the ball in the second half, U’s surviving one goalmouth scramble soon after going ahead but Mya Francis in the U’s goal otherwise relatively untroubled as Dulwich failed to find the target with their shots and Sutton’s defence proved resolute in front of her.
The game against Leatherhead is scheduled for next Sunday, 2 February, and we will confirm the venue and kick off time later in the week.
