Sutton make a first ever senior competitive visit to Roots Hall on Saturday to face Southend United, looking to end a run of three consecutive defeats in the Vanarama National League. We will be wearing amber.

Please note that the Supporters’ Club coach leaves at 11am, price £25. Email suttonunitedcoachtravel@hotmail.com to find out if there are any spaces still available. Payment required when booking.

Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at Dagenham followed a similar reverse at home to Boston and an unfortunate defeat against Forest Green, results which have seen U’s drop from third in the league table to 17th, while Southend recorded an impressive home win against Eastleigh on Tuesday to remain unbeaten at home with two wins and two draws from their four games at Roots Hall. They have a game in hand over most sides in the division after their trip to Fylde was aborted due to a broken down train, and have lost just once, 2-1 at Barnet.

This is Southend’s fourth season in the National League after being relegated in 2021, and for a lot of that time they have been playing against a background of off pitch uncertainty, but despite that they finished two points outside the play-offs in 2023 and last season would have been in the end of season competition but for a ten point deduction which dropped them back to 9th.

Midfielders Jack Bridge and Cav Miley will be familiar to U’s fans from spells at Bromley and Eastleigh respectively, although Miley is an injury doubt, while experienced midfielder George Moncur signed on loan last month from Leyton Orient. He was joined by another former Brisbane Road favourite this week when Southend signed Macauley Bonne, a member of O’s National League championship side in 2019.

Sutton are waiting to see the extent of Hayden Muller’s injury after the defender limped off at Dagenham, while Dillon De Silva remains a couple of weeks short of a return.

As on Tuesday, Saturday’s game will be refereed by a Football League official, with Alan Young having been on the EFL list since 2018. His last Sutton game was the 1-1 draw against Newport on New Year’s Day.
