We are delighted to announce that head coach Steve Morison and assistant coach Anthony Fenton have both signed a two-year contract extension on their current deals, extending their stays at the VBS Community Stadium until 2027.

Morison joined the club at the start of the year following a stint in the Isthmian League Premier Division, guiding Hornchurch to the top of the table before his departure from the Upminster-based outfit.

The 40-year old would take over a club at the bottom of League Two, but took the relegation fight to the final day of the season in a valiant attempt to stay in the division.

The former striker enjoyed a glittering 18-year playing career, turning out for Northampton Town, Bishop’s Stortford, Stevenage Borough, Millwall, Norwich City, Leeds United and Shrewsbury Town, as well as appearing internationally for Wales between 2010 and 2012.

Morison transitioned into coaching following retirement with spells in the academies of Northampton Town and Millwall, before moving to Cardiff City as lead coach of the Under-23’s. He was later placed in temporary charge of the first team following the departure of Mick McCarthy and subsequent spent 18 months with the Bluebirds, before departing South-East Wales in September 2022. He later dropped into the Isthmian League Premier Division with Hornchurch almost a year after his exit from the Welsh capital, spending seven months in Upminster before replacing Matt Gray at Gander Green Lane back in January.

Anthony Fenton meanwhile has followed Morison to both the U’s and former club Hornchurch, and joins the gaffer in extending his deal. Turning out for Manchester City and Portsmouth as a youngster at the start of his playing career, the former defender represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 level, before playing for a number of non-league teams including Bishop’s Stortford and Boreham Wood.

Upon signing his new deal, Morison claimed “I’m delighted to keep going. Myself and Anthony are keen to see the project we’ve started to the end and bring Sutton back to where they belong”.

Majority shareholder Gary Otto agreed, “We’re delighted to have Steve and Anthony extend their contracts with Sutton United. Their leadership and vision have been instrumental in our progress, and we believe they are the right team to take us to new heights and back to The Football League.”
