Sutton’s women suffered a heavy defeat at Carshalton today against Dulwich, who bounced back from last week’s FA Cup exit at Billericay with a performance that wasn’t flattered by the scoreline.

Dulwich led by a single goal at half time but had dominated and would have scored more but for some good goalkeeping by Zoe McNulty, some fine defensive blocks from Ella Meehan and Abbie Measures, and some wasteful finishing, although they were unluvky on one occasion to hit the post. The one they did score came when Sutton lost possession on the edge of their own penalty area to leave the Dulwich striker with a simple finish.

U’s might even have been level at half time, QPR loanee Amelia Cutler almost marking her debut with a goal as she blocked the goalkeeper’s clearance but couldn’t quite force the ball in to the net.

Sutton continued to resist in the second half, McNulty making two more good saves including one where she just prevented the ball crossing the line, and even when Dulwich did score a second McNulty was unlucky, making a good save from a header but helpless from the rebound. After that Dulwich eased away to give the scoreline a reflection of their dominance, the highlight being their fifth goal which was sent unstoppably past McNulty from all of thirty yards. Measures did go close with a shot from a similar distance, but Sutton finished well beaten and drop a place to ninth in the London & South East Regional League, although still only three points behind fourth placed Ebbsfleet.

There were also debuts for former Watford and Bromley winger Adenya Henry, Emily Bird, signed from Fulham, and Holly Talbut-Smith who has joined from Haywards Heath.

Team: Z McNulty, S Modak, E Meehan, F Colepio, K McIntyre, E Bird, A Henry, A Measures, A Cutler, D Wells, L Murtagh. Subs K Kabadaki, K McKenzie, J Backhurst, H Talbut-Smith
