Sutton and Boston face each other for the first time since the 1990-91 season when the Lincolnshire side are the visitors to the VBS on Saturday.
Boston were promoted through the National League North play-offs last season, finishing sixth in the final table but then beating Alfreton and Scunthorpe, both on penalties away from home, before clinching their place in the National League with a 2-1 win at Brackley in the final.
Their six games so far have produced a win, a draw and four defeats, with their victory coming at York on Bank Holiday Monday, and their other away game a 2-0 defeat at Southend. They are currently one place off the bottom of the table, three points clear of Ebbsfleet. They will travel on Saturday without midfielder Jordan Richards, who is suspended after being sent off in last week’s defeat against Yeovil.
Sutton suffered a first defeat of the season at home to Forest Green last Saturday, a result that saw Us slip to 8th place in the table. Hayden Muller has shown no ill effects following his knock against Forest Green last week and should be fit to be in the squad, as should Josh Coley, with Dillon De Siva the only injury absentee.
The sides met for five seasons between 1986 and 1991 in what was then the GM Vauxhall Conference, with Boston winning on one of their visits to Gander Green Lane, a 2-1 success 37 years ago almost to the day. Sutton won twice, and there were two goalless draws, including the most recent meeting in 1990.
Saturday’s referee is Ross Martin, officiating in a Sutton game for the first time, who has been a National League referee since the start of this year. In May he refereed the National League South play-off final between Worthing and Braintree and on Tuesday was in charge of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy game between Exeter and Swindon.
