Sutton v Tranmere preview

It’s a meeting of two of the bottom three sides in Sky Bet League Two, with Tranmere moving out of the bottom two with last week’s 3-0 win against Forest Green, which ended a run of four straight league defeats, dropping Forest Green below them, but Sutton could move above the Wirral side and off the foot of the table with a victory in tomorrow’s game.

Sutton are unbeaten in the last three league and cup games, Omar Sowunmi’s late equaliser last week earning U’s a first point on the road after home wins against Bradford in the league and Fylde in the FA Cup, and U’s will be hopeful of preventing Tranmere break their own away duck on Saturday, the visitors coming in to the game having lost all seven of their away games this season. They also went out of the FA Cup a fortnight ago, although only after giving League One Stevenage a real battle, Stevenage scoring a winner deep into stoppage time after Tranmere’s own stoppage time goal looked to have earned a replay.

Tranmere’s disappointing start to the season saw Ian Dawes replaced as manager by the experienced Nigel Adkins in September, but he is likely to be without two key players on Saturday with striker Luke Norris and midfielder Josh Hawkes, the latter one of the scorers for Tranmere in the 2-2 draw at Prenton Park in January. Kane Hemmings, who scored in that game and also Tranmere’s 2-0 win at the VBS earlier last season, has now joined Stevenage while Paul Lewis, the other scorer at Sutton last season, is also on the injured list.

Sutton will have Ben Goodliffe available again after his one match suspension, while Craig Clay has a chance of being fit having failed a fitness test in the warm up at Colchester last week. 

Referee Lee Swabey is in his 9th EFL season and was last at Sutton early last season for the visit of Mansfield, altough more recently he took charge of the defeat at Salford in January.
