EFL Week of Action 2023-24.jpg

This session is for girls between the ages of six and eleven, and on Monday Lee and Ryan joined them,  taking part in some of the drills and going in goal for the game at the end. Lee took a more generous approach when it came not making saves whereas Ryan, true to his defender’s instincts, did everything in his power to get the clean sheet. The girls loved it and took the opportunity to ask them some questions at the end of the session.

On Tuesday the Foundation ran a session at Harris Academy in Morden. The club had spoken to the Academy about the lack of engagement they were getting  from the female students when it came to football. Only six girls were turning up to the school run sessions, but on Tuesday night for the first session 24 girls turned up and had a great time, and subsequently a numbr of girls have enquired about joining team.

On Tuesday there was also a visit to the Sutton United women’s reserve team training session, where we had a chance to have a chat with Charlotte who told us how much she enjoys being part of the team. She said that there are girls in the team that have become her closest friends and the team has continued to improve through the twice weekly training.

On Wednesday it was back to Goals North Cheam to see the walking football (above). There were twenty gentlemen there, all over the age of 60 with one in his mid 80s. The football was fantastic but more importantly the social aspect shone through, with everybody laughing and smiling throughout the session.

On Saturday the Foundation will be attending the Disability Squad training session to see the fantastic work being done by Steve King and his team – unfortunately the session earlier in the week where members of the first team squad were due to attend had to be cancelled due to the weather.

CAREW ACADEMY ENJOY A DAY AT THE GAME

Last month we welcomed over 90 students and families from the Carew Academy in Wallington who took up the opportunity of tickets for the game against Walsall. We have had feedback from the Academy saying what a fantastic day out they had, and what a great experience it was for their students, some of who were attending their first game of football and, in some cases, probably meeting a giraffe for the first time.
