Sutton appear in front of the BT cameras for the first time this season tomorrow, visiting Wealdstone for a match that pits third in the National League table against second, a scenario few would probably have predicted when the game was chosen before the start of the season. However U’s moved above Saturday’s opponents in to second place with Tuesday’s draw against Dagenham, while Wealdstone saw a run of five consecutive league wins ended with a 2-0 defeat at Eastleigh.
That was Wealdstone’s third defeat of the season, with a 1-0 reverse at Dagenham in a televised match followed by a 5-2 home loss against Stockport, the visitors scoring four times in the last thirteen minutes.
Promoted as champions from National League South last season, the Stones have three former Sutton players in their squad this season, Dan Wishart, Moses Emmanuel and Ross Lafayette, while their additions in the summer also included Jorome Slew and Danny Parish, who came to prominence in Maldon & Tiptree’s FA Cup run last season. Both have been on target this season, Parish scoring a hat trick in the 3-2 win at King’s Lynn. Only leaders Torquay have scored more league goals than Wealdstone this season, but only Dover and King’s Lynn have conceded more.
U’s will be waiting to see if Will Randall has recovered from the knock that forced him off against Dagenham on Tuesday, otherwise Coby Rowe is the only absentee. There are fond memories of U’s last visit to the ground, Aaron Drinan’s last minute goal securing an FA Cup win two seasons ago moments after Jamie Butler had saved a penalty, while Louis John was on target in the last league meeting at Grosvenor Vale as U’s closed in on the National League South title in 2016 with a 2-0 win.
The game is live on BT Sport, kicking off at 5.20pm, and for those not able to watch we will have a Mixlr commentary live from Grosvenor Vale.
