Disability Showcase Day

8 May 2024

It was the Ganders and Jays disability teams who took centre stage at VBS Community Stadium on Disability Showcase Day on Monday.

The invitation went out to our friends from Southwark Stars in celebration of all that's good about Disability Football.

The first game was a classic and despite the scoreline it was an end to end game with plenty of chances from both teams. It was goalkeepers Mark Herritage and Aniks Sunil that kept the Stars' strikers out, and the Jays ran out 5-1 winners with two goals from Jamie Reynolds and one apiece from Nick West, Christine Salkeld (below) and Lewis Pain. Stars' scorer was Yosief Semere.

Next up, the Championship level game between Sutton United Ganders and Southwark Stars started extremely brightly with the Stars pushing Ganders back in their own half for long periods of time, and it was no shock that Stars led 2-0 at half time, both goals coming from Chris Forster.

In the second half the Ganders looked a different team and it was their turn to push the Stars back line hard. Paul Hayward pulled a goal back and James West completed the comeback to take the game to penalties, with Ganders going on to win the shootout 4-3.

Steve King, Head of Disability Football at Sutton United Foundation said : "This was our first Disability Showcase Day and who better to invite than our friends from Southwark Stars. Both clubs have thriving Disability Sections and always play with amazing sportsmanship, friendship  and respect, and that's what Disability Football is about.''
